Matic is making a noise

Some sounds from Matic are completely normal, like the fan running while docked, or the vacuum motor ramping up during a deep clean. Others can be a sign that something needs attention. This guide will help you identify what you're hearing and what to do about it.

Fan noise while docked

Matic runs a cooling fan continuously while sitting on its dock, and will occasionally ramp it up to purge humidity from the vacuum system. This is expected behavior.

If the fan noise seems unusually loud or has been running at high speed for an extended period, try the following:

  1. Open Matic's lid while the sound is occurring. If the noise stops immediately, this is the vacuum motor's humidity purging cycle — normal behavior that should resolve on its own.
  2. If the noise continues with the lid open, try moving Matic off its dock to determine whether the sound is coming from Matic or the dock itself.
  3. If the sound is coming from the dock, contact support.
  4. If the sound is coming from Matic and doesn't resolve, contact support.

High-pitched whine during vacuuming

A high-pitched whine or squeal during vacuuming is one of the most common noise issues. It's often caused by a full dust bag, but can also indicate a hardware issue with the vacuum motor.

  1. Check your HEPA bag and replace it if it's more than a quarter full. A filling bag causes the motor to work harder and run louder.
  2. Make sure the brush roll is properly seated by removing it, cleaning any debris from around the housing, and reinserting it.
  3. Run a short cleaning session and check if the sound has improved.

If the high-pitched whine persists after replacing the bag and reseating the brush roll, contact support. This may be a known motor resonance issue that our team can address through a repair.

Squeaking during movement

Squeaking can come from a few different places depending on when you hear it.

From the brush roll:

  1. Remove the brush roll and clean out any lint, hair, or debris from around the orange drive bearing.
  2. Reinsert the brush roll and make sure it clicks into place.
  3. Run a short vacuuming session to see if the squeaking has resolved.

During mopping:

  1. Remove and rinse the mop roll under warm water, then let it dry fully before reinserting.
  2. Check that the mop roll is properly seated and clicks into place.
  3. Run a short mopping session to see if the squeaking has resolved.

While moving on hard floors:

  1. Check the rear caster wheel and side wheels for pet hair or debris wrapped around the axle. Remove any buildup.
  2. If the squeaking only happens during mopping maneuvers on wet floors, this is a known behavior our team is working to improve through a software update. This doesn't indicate a hardware problem.

Side brush squeaking:

  1. Remove the side brush and check for hair or debris wrapped around the base. Clean it thoroughly before reattaching.
  2. Make sure the side brush clicks fully back into place.
  3. Run a short session to check if the squeaking has resolved.

If squeaking persists after these steps, contact support.

General loudness increase over time

If Matic has gradually become louder than it used to be:

  1. Replace the HEPA bag — this is the most common cause of increased noise.
  2. Clean the brush roll and check for debris in the vacuum duct (Settings → Hardware Tutorial Videos → Duct Clogged).
  3. Run a cleaning session and check whether the loudness has reduced.

If the noise doesn't improve after these steps, contact support.

FAQs

Is it normal for Matic to make noise while docked?

Yes. Matic runs a cooling fan at all times while docked and periodically ramps it up to purge humidity from the vacuum system. Some fan noise while docked is expected and by design.

Matic sounds louder in heavy duty mode ?

Yes. Heavy duty mode runs the vacuum motor at higher RPM, which makes it noticeably louder than optimal mode. This is expected behavior.

I hear clicking during mopping — what does that mean?

Clicking during mopping is usually caused by the mop roll not being properly seated, or a problem with the mop roll itself. Try removing and reinserting the mop roll. If clicking continues and Matic throws a "mop roll jammed" error, follow the steps in our Mop Roll Jammed guide.
